Maggi Anderson ~ 5 Star
Rosemary Morris has a wonderful understanding of this period of history and she adroitly evokes the period her characters inhabit with all its pomp and ceremony. It is rich in its detail of customs, classes, servants, beliefs, London life, food, interiors and the exquisite fashions.
Rosemary Morris ties up the subplots neatly and everything falls satisfactorily into place. I was rooting for Edward and Katherine to find happiness together in this older woman/younger man romance. There's no childish squabbling between the hero and heroine here. The author's mature understanding of human nature enriches the romance, as it does in her other novels, making The Captain and the Countess a very enjoyable read. ~
5 Star ~ Mrs Jennifer M. Black
Rosemary Morris lives and breathes the late Stuart period of history. The world she describes, in which Morals and Rules were known and adhered to, has vanished now, but her characters speak and behave in keeping with what we know of the customs of the well-born of the time, which makes a refreshing change to the huge amount of historical fiction where young girls behave and think as they would in this century.
If you enjoy sentences put together with care and grace, dialogue that sparkles without falling into clichés, slang and platitudes; if you want a storyline with genuine twists and turns and a happy ending that comes as a surprise and does not jar against the habits of the time, then this book will give you, as it did me, great pleasure.

I loved the historical detail in this book. The Countess`s clothes, her levees (a very strange custom by modern standards) and the Captain`s steady but never pushy pursual of her kept the tension just right. Add to the mix the Countess`s children, neither of them with her at the beginning of the book for plausible and cleverly revealed reasons, and there is more than enough to keep a reader interested and turning the pages.Product details

The Captain and the Countess edition by Rosemary Morris Romance eBooks Reviews
Rosemary Morris has an in depth knowledge of the Queen Anne era, which is not featured so much in historical romances. This is illustrated in her characters’ attitudes to what was acceptable in a past time, the difference in manners, superstitions and behaviour that ruled people’s lives, or could wreck them too. Combined with her understanding of human relationships and frailties, her stories are always rich in period detail and excellent characterisation.
In this the lesson is clear; never instruct a young man to marry a perfectly suitable young lady because he’ll run off and find a far more unsuitable one to fall in love with. And Edward finds Kate, an older widow who captivates him.
Kate, nicknamed ‘The Fatal Widow,’ has a dark secret, and ultimately Edward is involved in a search for missing children which becomes quite stirring at times, with plenty of tension so I was rooting for them to be restored to their family. Edward Howard and Kate Sinclair are well drawn main characters who are also well matched in strength of character and intellect, thus I couldn’t help hoping they would finally be together for their happy ever after ending.
The story isn’t all doom and gloom though – and there is humour to lift the mood in the subject of Sir Newton’s hat.
From the moment Captain Edward Howard lays eyes on Kate, Countess of Sinclair, he realizes he must do everything in his power to make her happy. There’s pain behind Kate’s façade and he’s determined to help her in any way he can.
Kate likes Captain Howard immediately, even when he’s forward with her and seems to disregard propriety in search of the truth. The attraction scares her and she guards her heart against the young Captain’s desire. Her past comes calling and she must choose between what her heart wants and what society expects of her. Will she and Edward have a future or will her past continue to haunt her?
This is the first book I’ve read from Morris and I really enjoyed it. Morris is a historian at heart and it shows in her writing. I kept pinching myself, to make sure I wasn’t in 18th century England. Every detail, from English customs to costume and speech was historically accurate. The dialogue was spot-on and I found myself caught up in the emotional tension between the characters.
If you’re a fan of historical romance (especially Pre-Regency), you’re in for a treat with The Captain and the Countess. The writing style of Rosemary Morris is reminiscent of Edith Wharton (The Age of Innocence) and I look forward to reading more from her.
Favorite Character
Kate. I loved everything about her, from the way she carried herself in society to the way she cared for her children to the way she fell in love with Edward. She’s a victim of an abusive husband yet that didn’t stop her from living life to the fullest. A woman after my own heart.
Favorite Quote
“She was a lady without comparison, beautiful, mysterious, and vivacious. After he dined, he would take the air in Hyde Park in the hope of encountering her.”
My Rating 4.5 stars
I'm a fan of Rosemary Morris's writing. She always delivers something a little different, with style.
The 'Captain and the Countess' is a powerful historical romance. Powerful, because of the stakes involved - missing children, love, desire. The theme of a search for missing children is really well done, with tension and at times heart-rending scenes. (I sniffed into my hankie a few times, reading this novel.)
The 'Captain and the Countess' is rich in its detail of customs, beliefs, cities, classes, servants, fashions, meals and more. Set a time when ancient superstitions can destroy a young woman's life, the novel shows the transition between our more modern 'rational' time and the older medieval age with great accuracy.
The 'Captain and the Countess' is a moving romance, too. Edward is a wonderful hero, patient, caring, direct, insightful. Kate, the heroine, is tender and delightful, beset by troubles and a tragic past but always striving, always hoping. They are well-matched and I was willing them to find their HEA together, which they do.
Finally, the novel is original in the way it tackles certain themes. The hero and heroine don't simply bicker for the sake of tension. They argue because it matters and they don't sulk afterwards but seek to work together. The historical period Rosemary Morris has chosen, that of Queen Anne, just before the Regency, is wonderfully fresh and springs to life through her skillful words.
Thoroughly recommended.
Very engrossing story . The Countess is not only older than the Captain , she is richer. However, the story shows that the heart doesn't look at calendars or bank accouns. Edward Howard is a hero to cherish. . The story is set in a time period unfamilar to me and not one I am likely to take up .
Great historical romance. Rooted for the hero for the entire book. Tension present and kept me guessing to the end
I loved the historical detail in this book. The Countess`s clothes, her levees (a very strange custom by modern standards) and the Captain`s steady but never pushy pursual of her kept the tension just right.
